Dollmaking with a girl gone thread wild
________________________________________________________________________________________

My name is Monica and I am partial to creating my art dolls with the playful disposition of a child let loose on the playground, that means anything goes. What motivates me to create is the colourful richness of texture, the beautiful mayhem of the recycled object, and all that is wild about "play." I'm inspired by Frida Kahlo, Emily Dickinson, Patti Culea and colorful people.
I create because... if I didn't my head would explode!

As a doll artist I was given the title of, "Princess of Touch," from an art friend because of my tendency to create textural pieces. My given name of "girl gone thread wild," I feel tells of my intentions to push the boundaries of fabric art. There is something very exciting about creating the art doll using recycled bits that ordinarily would head straight to the trash. Most every artist I know enjoys the scavenger hunt of the found object, but I think they'd agree that the real journey is in the creative process of building and giving new life to a piece of preserved nature, a nekkid doll form or a piece of garbage.

TinManWhen I approach a project I generally have no idea what I aim to create until I pile a few items before me and let my imagination take over. An old fork could very easily become the spine of a doll, but my most favored recycled object of all has to be the leftover sheddings from cut fabric. I also save any cut pieces of thread, fringe, yarn, wool & ribbon to add to the mix.

I admit I have pounds and pounds of "fabric rags," EVERY bit of the little beauties goes right into a plastic bag until I have enough fill to throw right into the washing machine. The washing & drying process gives good fray to the cloth and makes a tangled mess of color, not to mention the frayed edges that are now loosened by water will make for awesome texture when added to your doll. You can't buy this kind of happiness! Next time you approach a doll project look for inspiration from recycled fabric scraps. Left loose, fabric scraps can lead way to become doll dresses, doll hair, doll bodies, and doll faces. You can lay it right down onto muslin and with a bit of stitching you can create NEW fabric to make doll forms, ATCs, fabric books... oh, the fun to be had! Try it out, go, do it, now!!!

Encouraging self expression in fabric
I have been sewing for over 16 years, whipping out costumes, clothing, rag dolls, fabric books, artist trading cards, the beloved doll form, fabric beads, cloth shrines, wall art, collage, but the art doll has been the most rewarding for me. I encourage you to try your hand at creating in fabric, please check out my art forms to include the doll blank, fabric books, ATC blanks & more.

Art eXposed
Silence the critic!
In the beginning
I fought with my muse,
I tried to make what others
wanted me to create,
I exhausted the beauty
that was within
to the point
it ceased to speak...
it wasn't until I started
to make what I wanted to
that I found MY eternal voice.
Art out loud!

Please enjoy the art dolls I have created and consider using the recycled trash bits in your next art piece. I hope I've inspired you!

*Live life beautifully* kindly, Monica :)
